Zhang worked Joyce with the left before he delivered the knockout blow with a powerful right hook which sent his 38-year-old opponent to the canvas – and could well end his hopes in the heavyweight division.
The next several years were marred with more accusations of physical assaults, sexual harassment and public incidents. In 2000, a random drug test revealed that Tyson had been smoking marijuana. The results caused boxing officials to penalize Tyson by declaring his October 20 victory against Andrew Golota a loss.
Tyson’s amateur career included impressive victories, culminating in his professional debut in 1985. Known for his ferocious punching power, Tyson quickly rose through the ranks, defeating numerous opponents and gaining attention in the boxing world.
Chinese officials did, too. In 1998, Zhang moved to Zhengzhou, the site here of a provincial training center. Success followed. A silver medal at the 2004 university championships. A bronze at the world championships in ’07. In ’08, Zhang claimed his silver medal at the Beijing Olympics. He began studying not just boxing but also boxers. Mike Tyson. Evander Holyfield. Lennox Lewis. Not just their skills but also their fortitude. “Great heavyweights, when they fight into the last couple of rounds they’re all gassed out, but they are still throwing punches,” says Zhang. “At the end of the fight it’s all mental. That’s when you see a fighting spirit.”
On May 24, 2011, Judge Catherine D. Perry denied Whitmill’s request to enjoin the film’s release, citing a potential $100 million in damages to Warner Bros. and disruption to related businesses. However, she found that Whitmill had “a strong likelihood of success” on his copyright claim and characterized most of Warner Bros.’ arguments as “just silly”, saying:
Tyson defended his title twice more before his winning streak came to an end on February 11, 1990, when he lost his championship belt to Buster Douglas in Tokyo. Tyson, the clear favorite, sent Douglas to the mat in the eighth round, but Douglas came back in the 10th, knocking Tyson out for the first time in his career.
Barkim started introducing me to people on the street as his “son.” It was street terminology that warned people not to disrespect me. It meant: “This is my son in the streets, we’re family, we rob and steal. This is my little moneymaker. Don’t fuck with this nigga.” He bought me a lot of clothes, but he never gave me a lot of money. He’d make a couple thousand from robbing and he’d give me $200.
Even though he retired in 2005 after the fight against Kevin McBride, trouble brewed since the infamous “Bite Fight” against Evander Holyfield on June 28, 1997. With his license revoked, ‘Iron’ Mike could resume boxing only by 1999. He won quite a few fights. However, his last shot at a world title dashed against Lennox Lewis three years later. Eight months later, he was to face Clifford Etienne at The Pyramid, Memphis, on February 22, 2003.
He took third place at the 2007 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Chicago, thus qualifying for boxing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he won a silver medal. His fight was the last event of the 2008 Olympics. His coaches were disappointed he missed the publicity that would have accompanied the final gold medal for China. Despite that, he attracted a lot of attention by being the first Asian to win an Olympic medal in the unlimited weight class. At the 2012 Olympics, he was defeated on points in the quarterfinal by Anthony Joshua, the future unified heavyweight world champion.
On his right forearm, Tyson has a dragon tattoo which is easily the most impressive of all his artwork. This is the one tattoo there is little information on, with nobody being sure of the tattoo artist or the actual meaning behind the tattoo. Tyson himself hasn’t discussed the ink but as The Sun detailed, “In Chinese culture, the dragon represents strength, wisdom, and freedom,” so it wouldn’t be a stretch to think Tyson knows this and wanted the tattoo to represent these things. Or maybe he just really likes dragons? We will never know until he comments on the artwork.
Pernell Whitaker was one of the greatest boxers of all time. Known for his incredible defensive skills, Whitaker dominated the boxing world in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was admired for his quick reflexes, precise punches, and ability to avoid getting hit.
Now, after experiencing the benefits of psychedelics for himself, the “Kid Dynamite” is getting ready to take a jab at the global mental health crisis with a personal investment in Wesana Health, a biotech company in the medicinal psychedelics space.
But Tyson’s game seemed to be on the decline. Once known for his complicated offensive and defensive moves, the boxer seemed to continually rely on his one-punch knockout move to finish his bouts. He blamed his trainer for his struggles in the ring and fired Rooney in mid-1988.
Tyson’s personal life was marred by failed relationships, including a tumultuous marriage to Robin Givens. His behavior outside the ring often made headlines, and he faced allegations of domestic violence. In 1992, Tyson was convicted of rape and served three years in prison.
